I can do hard things!

I want to be a better mom, I want to enjoy my family more, I want more peace in my home, I want my home to be filled with fun and love and joy and tradition. I want my kids to never doubt how important they are and how special they are and how much they are loved. I want to be a better example to my kids of kindness and forgiveness and service. I want to be an example to my kids of how a person should talk and act and live. Wow! I've got a lot of work to do, but lucky for me I can do hard things!
Which just happens to be our family theme for the year. I'm a little late with getting started. Ideally we would have a special family night before the start of the new school year and introduce the theme, but that didn't happen and it's not going to happen until the middle of September (Which is when school should start any way, not on the 8th of August!). But I've decided that this family night is going to be epic! I have a few ideas and more bouncing around in my head not fully formed, but it's going to be good ya'll.
Of course none of my ideas are original. I have so many great ladies to draw inspiration (read: copy) from, like this awesome mom, and so many others. Some who I know IRL (that means "in real life") and some who I just blog stock. I'm sure some of you will recognize some of your ideas that I borrowed/stole. I hope you don't mind.
Any way, I will post all about our special night after it takes place, but for now I just wanted to get down a few thoughts and also make a list of possible future themes. I'm looking for more ideas so if you have any that you are willing to share leave me a comment.
Possible future themes
-Be a light
-Find joy in the journey
-"by small and simple things are
great things brought to pass " Alma 37
-Be Grateful, Be Smart, Be Involved, Be Clean, Be True, Be Positive, Be Humble, Be Still, and Be Prayerful. -Gordon B Hinckley-
-"Organize yourselves; prepare every needful thing; and establish a house, even a house of prayer, a house of fasting, a house of faith, a house of learning, a house of glory, a house of order, a house of God;" d&c 88:119

I love it! "I can" was our theme last year and the message held strong for an entire year.

One idea for "I can do hard things" is to order some geodes (check amazon? I know Oriental Trading has them) and talk about how hard the rocks are. The beauty of the crystals inside would never be possible without the heat pressure around it. Once you've survived the difficulty of a task, a hard thing is broken, and what you have left is the treasure of of something even stronger and much more beautiful inside.

Enjoy your family night!

1 Nephi 3:7 is a great scripture to go with this theme, and another one is the "I can do all things through Christ..." scripture (I forget the refrence, but you know which one I mean...

My friend just did, "Seek Out Good Things" for her theme this year. I heart it and am totally doing it another year. Another thing I like that she does is put the theme phrase with the scripture verse refrence on a cute paper (she just bought the letters already cut from HobLob or some other scrapping store, or you could use a cricket or whatever) and framed it and hung it by her front door. I'm totally doing some kind of craft for ours. What a great reminder.

You're a great mom!
